How is Free Home different?

Free Home connects your computers without the use of accounts, third parties, or centralized servers. It creates a secure tunnel between your PCs directly and allows you to transfer files or view the remote screen as if you were in front of your computer.

Why is direct connectivity important?

A vast majority of companies that provide connectivity to your home PC rely on a centralized server to establish your connection, where the server is controlled and administered by that company. This means that, technically, your sessions could be logged, monitored, or recorded at any time and without your knowledge. The files transferred to and from your home computer(s) may also be cached, with a copy retained on a central server.

The centralized design becomes a particular concern when the company's servers are breached, which could alow malicious actors (hackers, foreign state actors) to eavesdrop on your screen sessions, record your keystrokes, or review a copy of the files you have transferred. The same is true when a disgruntled employee at the data center of your home PC connectivity provider decides to collect your keystrokes and sell your accounts and passwords on the dark web.

Therefore using any centralized service to connect to your home PC comes down to the question of trust. Are you 100% sure that your photos, tax documents, E-mails, account balances, and other sensitive details displayed on your screen are fully protected by your PC connectivity company?

Even if a company providing your home PC connectivity has a good reputation and undergoes regular security audits (which few conduct or publish), the mere technical possibility of having your screen sessions recorded and your keystrokes stored poses a notable concern for those who are aware of the risk.

Direct connectivity completely eliminates central servers and third parties from the chain when establishing a session between your computers. The creation of an encrypted network channel between your PCs is handled entirely by the software running on each end of the link - no central servers involved. This is a very different approach to accessing your PC(s) over the internet.

By combining several modern, decentralized, open-source technologies, Free Home creates a secure connection link between your computers directly. With no intermediaries involved, you can have the peace of mind that your remote screen sessions are private and remain your sessions. The files you copy between your PCs using Free Home remain your files.

Is Free Home secure?

Free Home connectivity is protected with a 256-bit AES cipher and secured using the "Home Phrase" and password of your choosing. Neither is ever transmitted over the network or stored at any third party, company, database, or cloud service.
